Hello there.
I’ve been practicing and refining my daily ritual; and I wanted to share with you the 3 simple things I do to start my day off magickal. Spoiler alert, my favorite part of these three things is you can do all of them first thing in the morning. These three simple things help me focus my intentions for the day, and start off on a magical foot. I struggled for a long time on how to practice my magick; and once I renewed my intentions toward the craft, I was looking for a way to make some of my mundane actions magickal. I talk a lot about this in my post on developing a daily ritual. If you haven’t read my post on establishing a daily ritual, you can do so here. Anyhow, the three simple tasks I’ll be talking about in this post are: Your Morning Cup, Lighting a Candle, and A single Tarot Card Pull.
My Morning Coffee
If you’re like me, you enjoy starting your day with a hot cup of something, my personal preference is coffee. So it should come as no surprise that this is one of the first elements of my daily ritual, and something I think most of you may already do. What you drink can be important, but it doesn’t have to be. If you want to focus more on a potion, and reaping the benefit of a morning potion, you could incorporate various herbs, and food items. But this could also be as simple as pouring your coffee, adding a sweetener (or not) and a creamer (or not). I add both of these things, and then stir my cup. I use the stirring action to build energy and speak or whisper my intentions for the day over my coffee. Essentially casting a spell over the rest of my day. I end this phase with a sip of coffee, letting the flavors and intentions settle in my mouth and my mind. If you think about it, it probably took you longer to read that than it takes me to cast this spell.
If you have the time you can take a longer moment to really focus energy related to your intentions for the day into your cup. You might place your hand over the cup and hold it there, feeling the warmth, and really imagining the energy of your intentions being imbued into that beverage that you will then imbibe and embody. Other customizations, to add more ritualization and personalization, could include a specific set of herbs based on the time or year, or intention. If you feel you need more connection, and have the time to sit and meditate over the cup feeling the warmth in your hands (don’t burn yourself), and the steam rising up. Or create a specific spell or process to prepare your cup to give it more of a structured ritual feel.

FYI just because I reference and prefer a hot cup of coffee, doesn’t mean you couldn’t do the same thing with iced coffee, tea, or even water.
Lighting a Candle
The next thing I like to do is head to my escritoire, and light a candle. This is a small part of my overall ritual as part of my regular card pull, but I also do this at work without pulling a tarot card. You can focus your intentions for this similarly to creating your morning cup of coffee, or if incorporating all three of these aspects in to one ritual you may want this to serve a different purpose. I like lighting candles to serve as an infusion for my environment.
At work I light a candle that is aligned with my Zodiac sign. I do this, lighting the candle with the intention of creating, and protecting an environment where I feel safe, supported, and productive. I like to imagine the flame of the candle burning off any negative energies or intentions that might enter my space. Choosing scents that speak to you, or come from herbs that are aligned with your purpose, will help bring more intentional power to your ritual. You can reference the basic table of herbs below (please keep in mind this is not an extensive list, and I encourage you to do your own research) to find appropriate correspondences.
TABLE OF HERBS
I’m a big proponent of soy wax candles, but I understand they can be pricey, or if you have a soy allergy you may be sensitive to the fumes from these candles. I urge you to choose the candle that is right for you. A dollar store candle will work just as well as a fancy brand name candle; it’s all about your energy and intention. There’s a lot to be said on candle magic, and color correspondences, and I’ll cover that in a later post. But I think the most important thing is to choose the color, scent, and wax type that is appropriate for you and your environment, and that speaks to you.
I’ll end this with a note on candle safety: please be conscious and mindful of your environment, candle placement, and duration of light, to ensure that your candle is not in close proximity to flammable items, or could easily fall over and start a fire.

Morning Divination
The third thing I like to do to give my day a magickal start is to pull a single Tarot Card. The majority of my divination practice with Tarot is a single card pull; there are some exceptions, and I will cover those in a separate post; but for my day to day, I pull one card. The question I ask of the deck is either what do I need to focus on today, or what does today bring.
For the longest time I was asking what today brings, and I’ve realized that this is a very passive question focused on what the universe is going to throw my way. I can either prepare for it, or I can roll with it, or get totally thrown asunder by it. I recently realized that perhaps this was a lazy or more precisely less focused way of performing the divination I needed for that day. Pulling a card with the question what do I need to work on today, puts the power in my hands to dial into making improvements, balancing, or, learning from the element that the card represents.
My card for today was the Star, and I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to be focusing on just yet, but as the day evolved I realized that I needed to accept that small spark of guidance that comes with the new beginnings associated with the star, and look at the areas where we can improve our systems at work to be more accountable for our deliverables.

Doing a card pull at the beginning of the day helps to set the tone for my day and try to see the magickal in my mundane workings but this could just as easily be something you do on your lunch break, or at the end of the day, and process with a period of reflection. I’ve been using a specific tarot planner right now, but this is the perfect kind of thing to record in your book of shadows and incorporate this into your daily practice.
If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading along. I just wanted to take the time to recap the benefits I find in doing three simple things as part of my daily routine. These three things are having an intentional cup of coffee most likely with a spell said over the cup, this inspires me to focus on my intentions for the day. Lighting a Candle which I do before I pull my tarot card, or once I get settled in my space at work, and helps to cleanse the energy in my space, to aid in progressing my intentions. Finally I like to know what the universe has in store for me, or what it wants me to be mindful of that day; so I pull a single Tarot Card.
If you feel that any of these elements of my daily ritual might be simple enough for you to incorporate into your own ritual, I encourage you to do so. Give them a try see how the feel, how they flow with your life and your energy, and keep what works, and change what doesn’t. If you want more Information on creating your own daily ritual, read my blog post here. I would love to hear from you: your thoughts on this post, your experiences with these elements of a daily ritual, and daily actions that you feel are also simple additions or alternatives to add or swap into a daily ritual. Thank you again.
Blessed Be!
